Donor Needed for Stanford Professor Nalini Ambady

Nalini Ambady –the first female Indian professor at Harvard University and at Stanford, and a trail-blazing researcher—is a Malayalee and is in desperate need of a stem cell donor.  She has two young daughters, and has only a few weeks left to find a donor. The doctors say the best chance for a match is with a Malayalee Nair, other Malayalees and South Indians in that order.  But South Asians are underrepresented in the registry; of the 10 million people registered, less than 2% are South Asian.

A world wide search is on to save Nalini. It has been covered by CNN, NBC, CBC, and Indiapost among many others.  In Canada, a drive to identify potential matches will take place this Sunday in Scarborough.  The goal is to find Nalini a donor and to increase the number of South Asians in the registry.

To learn more, please read this article that appeared on CNN this week written by Nalini’s daughter. http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/16/health/nalini-leukemia/index.html

This video tells part of the story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj1aL8h3V3g

CBC also covered the drive for Nalini this coming Sunday: http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2013/04/stanford-students-seek-bone-marrow-match-for-beloved-professor.html?cmp=fbtl

Could you  *please* get the word out to the members of your organization, it could save Nalini’s life.  To help, they could:

1)  attend the drive in Scarborough Civic Center on Saturday May 25 4pm – 6pm or

2) register on-line at OneMatch (www.OneMatch.ca), which will mail them a cheek swab kit, and they just mail it back.

Getting registered involves rubbing a q-tip against the inside of your cheek.  Donating stem cells is a similar to getting an IV.

For more information on stem cell donation please read here: Blood services Canada

Thank you for considering this! One of your members could be the match she needs! Please forward to as many people as you know and think could help!

Kerala-born Arjun Nair Progresses Experimental Way to Kill Cancer with Gold Nano “Bullets”

Toronto: Cutting edge research into an experimental therapy that deploys nano-particles of gold to kill cancer cells earned an Alberta high school student, 16, top national honours today in the 2013 “Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada” (SBCC).

Kerala-born Arjun Nair, 16, a Grade 11 student at Webber Academy, Calgary, was awarded the top prize of $5,000 by a panel of eminent Canadian scientists assembled at the Ottawa headquarters of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).

His research project, mentored at the University of Calgary, advances an experimental cancer “photothermal therapy” which involves injecting a patient with gold nanoparticles. The particles accumulate in tumours, forming so-called “nano-bullets” that can be heated to kill cancer cells.

Arjun showed how an antibiotic may overcome defences cancer deploys against the therapy and make the promising treatment more effective. Arjun’s research, which a panel of expert judges led by Dr. Luis Barreto called “world class Masters or PhD-level quality,” also won a special $1,000 prize awarded to the project with the greatest commercial potential.

Arjun  will compete for Canada April 22-23 at the International BioGENEius Challenge, conducted at the annual BIO conference, this year in Chicago.

More than 25,000 People Attended the 2013 Bollywood Monster Mashup!

Mississauga: As part of a cultural fusion in collaboration with the Mississauga Arts Council, Bollywood Monster Mashup (creation of Artistic Director Vikas Kohli) joined forces with Kaleidoscope Chinese Performing Arts Society (KCPA) to bring together Chinese Musicians, Indian Singers and Western Musicians. The result was the BOLLYWOOD DRAGON ORCHESTRA, which featured singers Ferzana, Himanshu Merchant, Tanveer Badar, and Prita Chhabra who performed hit Bollywood songs with a Western-Chinese twist!

For the first time ever, Indian, Chinese and Western Music fusion was presented so ingeniously in the GTA and was very well received at the Bollywood Monster Mashup 2013 event on August 24th at the Mississauga Celebration Square.

Western Musicians included multi-instrumentalist Lorenzo Castelli on the base, Jay Burak on the drums, the rocking guitarist Geoff Willingham and Jake Payne on the keys. Chinese Musicians included Lan Ye on Pipa, Feihong Nan on the Guzheng (Chinese Zither) and Linlin Wang on the Erhu. In spite of being unrelated to Indian Music, these musicians picked up on the nuances of Indian Music masterfully. With their support well known singers Ferzana, Himanshu Merchant and Tanveer Badar sang songs spanning the Bollywood film era.

With people dancing to renditions of hit songs Mere Angne Mein, Duma Dum Mast Kalandar, Apni To Jaise Taise, Choli Ke Peeche, Bumro, Nimbooda and many other songs, and wanting simply more!, The Bollywood Dragon Orchestra definitely created an evening to remember.

Film:The Heart of a Murderer

$
0
0

The “Heart of a Murderer” is a documentary film scripted, shot, directed and co-produced by Catherine McGilvray. The film shot with real characters on actual locations in Madhya Pradesh and Kerala took four years to make. The film was an attention grabber at the recently held Jakarta International film festival. Eighteen years after Samunder Singh stabbed and murdered a Catholic nun, Sr. Rani Maria, the former prisoner who served 12-year jail term has been invited to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Council for Family, invited 40-year old Singh after the pope Francis expressed his desire to meet him. A Catholic priest who helped Singh while in jail to experience forgiveness, and a nun, the younger sister of the slain Rani Maria declared a Servant of God, the first major step toward canonization, in 2007, will accompany Singh.

The docufilm tells the story of a Hindu fanatic who kills a Christian missionary in Jabua district of Madhya Pradesh some 18 years ago. Her family forgives him, obtains his release from jail, accepts him as a son and brother with a sacred Hindu ceremony. What happens in the heart of a human being who has received unconditional forgiveness?

A man on a train is looking out of the window. His name is Samundar Singh. The train is travelling across India, heading South, to Kerala. Samundar was once a convict. He had committed an awful crime. Through his voice and recollections, his story slowly unfolds.

Central India, prison of Indore, year 2002. Samundar is serving a life sentence for having stabbed to death a young Franciscan missionary, sister Rani Maria. An elderly man, white-haired, barefooted and dressed as a sadhu, warmly embraces Samundar saying: “God has forgiven you”. This man, in spite of appearances, is Father Michael, a Christian Sannyasi, called Swami Sadanand by all.

On the train, Samundar remembers how he was caught in the trap of religious fundamentalism, and how, abandoned by all his family and friends after the murder, he was forgiven and helped only by the family of his victim. He also remembers the day when, still in jail, he celebrated the rakshabandan, a Hindu rite in which a woman ties a bracelet (rakhi) around the wrist of a man, symbolizing the bond of sacred brotherhood. The woman who tied the bracelet was Selmy, Rani Maria’s sister. Selmy, a Christian nun, and Samundar, a Hindu, are now brother and sister.

Rani Maria’s family had forgiven Samundar immediately. After the rakhi, with Swami’s help, they asked and obtained a pardon for Samundar. Samundar was released from jail after 12 years in 2006.

Samundar is now a free man and lives in his native village. However, his wife had abandoned him while he was in prison and many in the community there barely tolerate him: some because he is a murderer, others because he now associates with the Christians. But Samundar is not afraid of them, nor does he take offence at their provocations.

He visits his sister Selmy at the convent before starting his journey by train to Kerala, where he will meet Rani’s mother and brothers. The only thing that matters for him now is the love of his new family. The mother’s embrace will be for him the start of a new life.

There are songs that are timeless classics, regardless of language, singer, composer and the likes. They are passed on from generations and one such song, though not composed a long time ago (if 20 years is not a long time!) – Ambalapuzhe unnikannanodu nee from the movie Advaitham (1992).

This made me google ‘Ambalapuzha’ and the facts are so interesting. Ambalapuzha, claims wikipedia, is a small town in the Aluppuzha district in the Kerala state.

The Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple is a landmark in Kerala and is associated with the Guruvayoor Sri Krishna temple. It was built in 790 A.D. by the local ruler Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran. Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple enshrines Lord Krishna in the form of Parthasarathy(Arjuna’s charioteer in Mahabaratha). Lord Krishna is popularly known here as Unnikannan (child Krishna). The idol of Krishna here is carved out of black granite stone holding a whip in His right hand and a conch in the left.

The  prasadam, payasam served in the Ambalapuzha Temple is famous among Hindu devotees.

Ambalappuzha Sri_Krishna Temple

Kerala is knows for its pristine rivers, greenery and nature loving residents. One of the leading newspapers (manaromaonline.com) has featured an article about the Ambalapuzha residents embracing eco-friendliness in their own way.

A residents’ association in Ambalapuzha has started an anti-plastic initiative  in their strive towards converting their beloved town into a plastic fee zone. About 2 Khaki cloth bags were distributed to 127 households and would be willing to supply more on demand,

The residents identify themselves with Khaki bags.

According to the association president Dr. Ambalapuzha Gopakumar and Secretary Madhava Panicker,  the distribution of cloth bags was decided by the association on the completion of the awareness programmes.

This will be an example to the entire state and to the country at large.

Replicating Indian heritage of art and culture on the Canadian soil, as much as they can, and keeping off the cultural alienation that the younger generation is likely to experience consequent upon the influence of other cultures is what they aim at.

Today, Dancing Damsels has risen to a non-profit dance promotions company. It is trying its best conduct a show on its own next year and also to arrange an annual South Asian dance festival in Toronto in the near future. TORONTO, Aug 10: Top Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, ministers and MPs, joined thousands of Indians Panorama India’s India Day Festival and Parade celebrating India’s 67th Independence Day on Saturday featuring cultural performances and a colourful parade in core downtown.

Congratulating Indians at day-long Independence day celebrations at Yonge-Dundas Square, Premier Kathleen Wynne said, “It is a wonderful celebration and I wish you a safe and happy Independence Day.’’ She praised the contribution of the Indo-Canadians for enriching Canada through their hard work and cultural diversity.

“You have strengthened our country through your hard work,’’ the Premier said at the annual event organized by Panorama India – an umbrella organization of various Indian associations. Highlighting deepening relations between India and the largest Canadian province, she said Ontario and India have a lot in common as both were models of democracy and multiculturalism. Lauding the contribution made by the Indo-Canadians in strengthening these bilateral ties, the Premier said Ontario is “fortunate to have half a million people who trace their origin to India.’’

She praised outgoing Indian consul general Preeti Saran for her contribution to strengthening bilateral ties between India and Ontario. “Preeti is one of the most gracious persons I have ever met,’’ Kathleen Wynne said. Thanking the Premier, Preeti Saran called her the `dearest friend’ of India and said India and Ontario shared deep bonds of friendship and common values.

Saran, who is leaving to take over as India’s ambassador to Vietnam, was wholesome in her praise of the Indo-Canadian community for their contribution in strengthening India-Canada relations.
“I had a pleasure working with the community…thank you for your immense support,’’ she said.
She said annual India Day celebrations in Toronto each year struck a chord in her and called her tenure as consul general in the city as `emotionally’ very satisfying.

Welcoming the Premier, the Consul General, dignitaries and the huge gathering with Namaskar, Sat Sri Akal, Adaab, Vanakum, Welcome and bienvenue, Panorama India Chair Jibanjit Tripathy said freedom remains the most cherished word in human history, and India’s freedom “remains the most cherished and recognized” event in world history. “As we continue to celebrate our independence, we remember those sacrificed their lives so that we could live a free nation,” Tripathy said.

He added,-Canadians are proud of their unique heritage and culture as well as being part of Canadian mosaic of multiculturalism. Today’ event, he said, is keeping with Panorama India’s mission to educate (others about India), celebrate (India’s diversity and rich heritage with others) and collaborate (with the mainstream).

Former Ontario Minister Harinder Takhar congratulated the Indian community on India’s Independence Day and highlighted the role played by the outgoing consul general Preeti Saran in further deepening India-Canada ties. “Preeti’s extra one and a half years were a bonus for us,’’ Takhar said amid laughter, referring to her four-and-a-half-year tenure in Toronto against the typical three-year assignments that Indian diplomats have enjoyed here.

In his speech, Tim Uppal, Canadian minister of state for multiculturalism, praised the immense contribution made Indo-Canadians to Canada.

Parliamentary secretary and senior-most Indo-Canadian MP Deepak Obhrai highlighted how India stood out in the world today for its vibrant democracy and economic growth and how it has become a role model for many countries since it began journey as an independent nation.

Senator Asha Seth read out Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s message of greetings for the Indo-Canadians.

“On August 15, 1947, the Indian national flag was raised for the first time and a new nation was born. Since that time, India has come into its own as a vibrant democracy and an emerging economic superpower, predicted to be the world’s third largest economy by 2050,’’ the Canadian prime minister said in his message. “Canada stands ready to deepen our significant partnership with India in order to advance our common interests and to promote new opportunities for economic development and international trade for the benefit of both our peoples.’’

The Canadian prime minister praised Panorama India, the umbrella body of various Indian organizations, for organizing India Day celebrations in Toronto.

“I would like to commend Panorama India for their hard work in organizing this event and for their commitment to fostering fellowship amongst Indo-Canadians in the GTA. You can be proud of your efforts to build a stronger community. Please accept my best wishes for a memorable celebration,’’ Prime Minister Harper said.

In his congratulation message read by MP John McCallum, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau said, “Such festivities work to connect our Indian communities with all Canadians…I, and the Liberal Party of Canada, believe that this country is great not in spite of its diversity, but because of it, and these celebrations further enrich society by introducing people to Indian culture and traditions.”

Kirsty Duncan, MP from the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke North, won rounds of applause for delivering her small congratulatory speech in halting Hindi-Punjabi mixture.

Earlier, the consul general unfurled the Indian national flag Tricolour and unveiled the Panorama India souvenir.

Among other prominent people who attended the opening ceremony were MPs Patrick Brown, Ted Opitz and Brad Butt; Ontario MPPs, Amrit Mangat and Deepika Demerla, Toronto City Councillors, Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Mukherjee, Order-of-Canada Aditya Jha; Major Charles Jansen, Chief Warrant Officer Patterson, Lt. Over a dozen tastefully decorated rickshaws added colour to the parade which was led by Indian consul general Preeti Saran and other officials. Singing and dancing on a bright sunny day, parade participants waved to passersby. For a while, it is all music and dance as the parade wound its way through Yonge Street, Queen Street, Bay Street and Dundas Street to reach back at Yonge-Dundas Square. “Participation in the parade has passed all our expectation. We are so delight. Today’s show is incredibly amazing in terms of visibility and numbers of people who came to participate in the parade. We are very satisfied with everything,’’ said Panorama India Chair Jibanjit Tripathy as he, along with Consul General Preeti and others, led the parade .

For the first time, North-east India was also represented in the parade by over a dozen people. “We are very happy to become part of larger Indian family, and we are feeling proud today as Indians and Manipuris,” said Joy Chabungbam who comes from Imphal in Manipur. “We are just 40-odd people from Manipur here in Toronto, and we increase in number we want to participate in more and more Indian functions,” said Chabungbam.

Later, the Gujarat parade contingent was declared the best, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

With the Independence Day parade winding off at about 1.30 PM, a pan-India cultural extravaganza was unleashed on the stage as artists depicting dance and music from various states performed non-stop till 8PM.
